The art of weaving has been an old tradition in the Kingdom of Nepal, especially in the mountainous region of the country. Radii, Pakhi, Bakkhu, Darhi (with pile) were the well-known Nepalese products practised in the region with locally available wool. The marketing of these products is confined to the domestic market due to the primitive production techniques.

The development of an export quality carpet was initiated with the influx of the Tibetan refugees in the early sixties. Accreditation goes to the Swiss Association for technical Association (SATA) for their contribution, in the development of the carpet industry in Nepal through financial & technical support to the Tibetan refugees cooperation programs. In the beginning, it were just items for tourist consumption. Gradually, it began to attract a consumer market abroad and initiated, in 1964, from the first commercial shipment to Europe, namely Switzerland. Since then, it has transformed into a more value added, labour intensive commercial commodity and remains te most important export product in Nepal by abysmal effort of entrepreneurs with international vision.

The Nepalese- Tibetan carpets have a thick pile- having the knot density ranging from 60-150 knots per square inch -the excellent property of the wool pile provides protection against cold and humidity.

The traditional design of the Nepalese-Tibetan carpet are basically influenced by Buddhism but in recent years the Nepalese manufacturers have introduced modern design and colours in line with the present day market tastes. The traditional size has been replaced by a wide range of sizes from 0.25Sq.m. to 56m2 and also round carpets. The desired designs, styles and shades are the creation of local designers & engineers with the constant feedback from related importers.

At present, 95 percent of the production of carpet is concentrated in the Kathmandu valley and the remaining 5 percent is spread over a number of districts of the country.
